Why have a management system?

Hi, SME owners and managers

Today I wanted to talk about management systems (I’m not talking here about your H&S statutory compliance, this goes without saying). There are several reasons why you would have one:

1. Your customers are ISO accredited and expect their suppliers to be accredited too. Good enough reason, and it is a fact that accredited companies get more business. However, is the management system you create because of customer pressure truly serving YOU? Who are you creating and certifying it for?

2. Yours is a permitted business, and you prefer to get away from having a competent person on site in favour of all your people being competent in relation to the permit. Now, this is getting closer to what serves you as a business - competent and trained workforce. A simple Competence management system would do the job here.

3. And this one is very often overlooked in my experience. A management system created with your business in mind will make your business flow better.

Are you working in constant chaotic fire-fighting mode?

Have you been sending out replacements time and time again? Can you say for certain what the reasons were?

Have you made a customer’s order only to find that they cancelled it weeks ago?

Are deliveries from a supplier constantly late, or incomplete, or just wrong?

Is machinery breaking down with monotonous regularity?

Is the product coming off the line inconsistent? And this is one I am pretty sure you will be familiar with - have you spent ages trying to decide which of the seven versions of the same document, saved in four different folders is the correct one?

Well, the management system would help. Chaos into structure. Better understanding of your business with less time spent in frustration. All you have to do is really want it and show your people you really want it. Oh, and get someone like me to create a system for your business, in simple language and involving your team to get them on board.

And whether you certify it, or not, is down to you in the end. You would still be the winner.
